Central asset location describes an asset storage location that is centrally located and accessible to all users. The advantage a CAL offers is that assets aren’t stored in locations, such as a user’s laptop, that won’t always be available to others in the organization.
Cumulus can use three different storage mediums as CALs:
- File server — This option provides the greatest flexibility with regard to drag & drop integration with applications.
- Ftp server — This option makes it possible to use Cumulus to catalog and track resources that reside on ftp servers.
- Cumulus Vault — The Vault provides check-in/out and version control for any file type, and provides limited drag & drop integration with applications. It stores assets in a single protected location, which is the reason it’s considered a CAL.
Open the Preferences window for any open catalog to see and edit the CAL settings for that catalog. See the options under ‘Catalog Settings > General tab’. (Your account permissions must include access to Catalog Settings).

NOTE: You might see references to Central Asset Storage Locations (CASLs) mentioned in some Canto and partner documentation. This was an older term to describe CALs, but there is no difference.
